Bitumen Grade 30/40

Bitumen grades numbers are representing softness or hardness of bitumen (completely melted form of bitumen, just like liquid) by measuring the depth in 1/10th of mm to which a standard needle carrying a weight of 100gms penetrates in 5 seconds at a temperature of 25 degree Celsius.

If grade of bitumen is 80/100 then penetration value lies between 8 to 10 mm. This grade is mostly used in India. Bitumen is also graded based on viscosity grading. 80/100 belongs to VG 10 group. Other grades of bitumen can be 30/40 (3-4 mm penetration value on penetration test), 60/70 (6–7 mm penetration).
